If you’re new to pottery, one of the first questions you might ask is: Should I try wheel throwing or hand building? Both are rewarding, creative techniques—but they offer very different experiences, outcomes, and learning curves.
At Mud Society Pottery Studio, we believe there’s no wrong way to begin your clay journey. Whether you're looking to center yourself at the wheel or shape something slowly by hand, here’s a breakdown to help you choose the path that feels right for you.
What Is Wheel Throwing?
Wheel throwing involves shaping clay on a spinning pottery wheel. It's what most people picture when they think of traditional pottery-making—the rhythmic spinning, the centered form, the perfectly round bowl coming to life.
What You Can Make:
Mugs, bowls, plates, and vases
Symmetrical, functional forms
Pieces that feel refined and polished
Pros:
Meditative and repetitive in a calming way
Great for creating multiples of the same form
Teaches technical control and precision
Challenges:
Steeper learning curve - centering the clay can be tricky at first
Requires access to a wheel and equipment
A little messy (but in the best way)
What Is Hand Building?
Hand building is exactly what it sounds like - creating pottery using only your hands and simple tools. It includes techniques like slab building, coil building, and pinch pots.
What You Can Make:
Sculptural or organic piecesPlates, planters, mugs, trays, or decorative objectsItems with texture and personality
Pros:
More approachable for beginners
Great for slow, intentional creativity
Allows for more expressive, artistic shapes
Challenges:
Pieces may take longer to shape
Harder to replicate exact forms
Less symmetry (which some people love!)
Which One Is Right for You?
Choose wheel throwing if...
You love structure and repetition
You’re curious about the classic pottery process
You’re okay with a learning curve and love a challenge
Choose hand building if...
You prefer a relaxed, tactile process
You enjoy sculpting or making art with your hands
You want to ease into pottery without needing a wheel
Still not sure? Try both! When Mud Society opens, our classes will offer the chance to explore both techniques - no pressure, just play.
Start Where You Are
No matter where you begin, pottery is about exploration, not perfection. The beauty is in the process, the imperfections, and the joy of making something from nothing.
Whether you're drawn to the spin of the wheel or the feel of clay in your hands, we can’t wait to welcome you into the studio soon. Subscribe to our newsletter for updates on our opening, grand opening promotions, and early class announcements!
